Charlestown & South Boston Alumni Run Marathon

Nancy & Alyson at MarathonOn Monday, April 20th Charlestown Club alumni Derek Gallagher, Nick Smith and Brian Wadman and South Boston Club alumnae Nancy Byrne and Alyson McGonagle ran the 113th Boston Marathon to raise money for their respective Clubs. This was the 12th run for Derek, 5th for Nick and 2nd for Brian, and the 1st marathon run for both women.

They were all members of the Charlestown and South Boston Boys & Girls Clubs Marathon Teams, which are part of the non-profit fundraising program of the Boston Marathon. They were part of a field of 25,000 people who made the 26.2 mile trek from Hopkington to Boston.
Derek, Nick and Brian raised $7,000 collectively, due in large part to the many Charlestown alumni who supported them. Nancy and Alyson raised more than $4,800 for the Club and were matched with another $1,800 through a South Boston Alumni Appeal. To find out more about either team please visit their web pages; Charlestown Alumni Marathon Team and South Boston Alumni Marathon Team.

Thank you to all of our loyal alumni who supported their fellow alumni runners.

Yvette PhilipTo meet Blue Hill alumna Yvette Philip, is to like her. She is smart, kind and caring. Despite having left Dorchester for college and graduate school at Bentley College, she remained close to the Club which she credits with helping her succeed in life. In 2007 she led the alumni planning committee for the post-Club renovation festivites.

Yvette is a CPA and currently works as a Senior Audit Assistant at Deloitte and Touche in Boston. She is also an active board member of the Boston Black Student Network as well as a member of Junior Achievement.
Jordan Alumni Lend a Helping Hand
Orange Leukemia Ribbon

On Thursday, April 16th dozens of Jordan Club alumni turned out to become bone marrow donors. The drive was help in honor of Javier Mendoza, the husband of South Boston Club alumna Jaclyn Spaulding. Javier has a rare form of Leukemia and needs a life-saving bone marrow transplant.

A patient's best chance of finding a match is someone of the same or similar ethnic background. Currently less than 6% of the National Bone Marrow Donor Database is of Hispanic decent. Javier's family has initiated a series of donor drives in an attempt to find a match for Javi and the thousands of other Hispanic patients who are searching for a match to save their lives. The Jordan Club was one of the first drives that was held and proved to be a success thanks to our dedicated and loyal alumni.

To find out more about Javier's story and how to register to become a bone marrow donor please visit www.javisarmy.com

Make a Gift for Tomorrow's Club Kid

Throughout Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston's 115 year history, we have been fortunate to have the ongoing financial support of our treasured alumni. While current-use gifts - a golf tournament or an outright cash gift - are beneficial to your Club in the short term, there is an ongoing need for long-term support. By making a planned gift today you are setting the Club up for financial stability tomorrow.

Future Club members will be shaped by our ability to build long-term support through planned gifts - a bequest (can be a dollar amount or % of your "estate"), a charitable gift annuity (provides fixed income to donor), gifts of property or real estate, and gifts through your IRA. Planned gifts ensure the positive experience you had as a Club kid is the same for future generations. Just last week the South Boston Club received a $5,000 gift from a bequest.

BGCB has professional resources available to assist you in discussing these gift options for any age and income level. Please contact Renee Besser by email or at 617.994.4782 if you would like more information. If you have already named BGCB as a beneficiary, we hope you will let us know so that we can properly recognize your intention and list you as a member of the Frederic C. Church Sr. Planned Giving Society.
