Charlestown Alumni Marathon Team

The Team- Derek Gallagher, Nick Smith & Brian Wadman

On Monday, April 20 Club Alumni, Derek Gallagher, Nick Smith and Brian Wadman, will run the 113th Boston Marathon to raise money for the Club. Collectively they have run the marathon 19 times; this is Derek’s 12th year, Nick’s 5th and Brian’s 2nd run. They will join the rest of the Charlestown Boys & Girls Club Marathon Team to be part of a field of 25,000 people who will make the 26.2 mile trek from Hopkington to Boston.

Derek, Nick and Brian decided to run the marathon for the Club because the Club played such a major role in shaping who they have become as adults. Derek and Nick joined the Club at the age of six and remained active members through their teen years. Brian became a member at an early age, but it wasn’t until high school that the Club became a large part of his life.

Despite the many remarkable things that they have accomplished in their lives, Derek, Nick & Brian have never drifted very far from the Club. Derek Gallagher is the Athletic Director at the Club today. He spends his days giving back to the community and Club that he loves so much. Nick Smith is a faithful friend of the Club and can often be found at Club events or playing basketball in the Club’s gym with other alums. Brian Wadman serves on the Club’s advisory board, is an active member of the Alumni Association and a Club parent. He is the father of two young sons (pictured left), the older of whom is now a third generation Club kid.

The Training- Derek, Nick & Brian each train for the marathon separately. Derek is a naturally gifted athlete, combined with a job where he spends his days in constant motion, and doesn’t have a very formal training regimen. Nick is also a natural athlete and an avid runner. He, like Derek, follows a very informal training plan. Brian, a recreational athlete, took up running specifically to run the marathon to benefit his health and to fundraise for the Club. He is following a more traditional 16-week training plan.

The Goal- Their hope is that they are able to raise at least $9,000 of much needed funding for the Club.

Donations can be made in any of the runners’ names or to the Alumni team in the designation field.
