On Monday, February 23 the Road Team from Invisible Children visited the South Boston Club. They screened two movies, one for children ages 9-12 and one for teens, and discussed the plight of children in Uganda with our members. They also had tons of fun hanging out with the Southie kids! School Age Child Care (SACC) hosted the event for the second year in a row.
Motivated by the unseen war in Northern Uganda, Invisible Children was created by three young filmmakers with a singular mission: To use the power of stories to change lives around the world.
Discovery, the Arts Department at the South Boston Club, makes good use of recycled items for art projects. Cardboard boxes have been a big hit lately. (Click on the images for a larger view)
TILL Camp at South Boston Club
Eight students from TILL along with professional TILL staff members are spending February School Vacation Week at the South Boston Club. Toward Independent Living and Learning (TILL), Inc., is a private, not-for-profit human service agency, established in 1980, providing a comprehensive range of services that meet the needs of individuals with disabilities. TILL, like the Club, emphasizes abilities, not disabilities.

South Boston teens participated in Unity Weekend from February 6 - 8, 2009. Teens from five Boston and Chelsea neighborhoods spent the weekend interacting, participating in targeted icre reakers, playing in an all-day basketball tournament and going to a Celtics game. The idea is to break down barriers and for teens from different neighborhoods to build trusting and fun relationshilp with one another. Celtics player Patrick O'Brien spoke with the teens, as did Legend Jo Jo White, and they brought the World Championship trophy (see picture!)
Author Diane Kozak visited the South boston CLub on February 9, 2009 and discussed her new book, "Full Circle 911" which serves as a reminder that beneath our differences is a common bond.
In addition to discussing the book, Di had some great advice for the teens, quoting Einstein:
"Imagination is more important than knowledge."
She also quoted her parents:
"Listen to what other people tell you, but make your own decisions."
"Be like a beagle, look around before you decide to do something."
"Keep your head held up high at all times."
