Meet Nancy Thompson
Nancy Thompson is known at the Yawkey Club of Roxbury as a positive role model who loves helping others. In her four years as a member, she has volunteered because she wants to help improve the quality of life for others, and has spoken up when wrongs needed to be corrected.
Even as she focuses her energy on those around her, Nancy has set high standards for herself and is committed to both academic and personal success. She studies because she knows it will bring academic success, and understands that success requires hard work. She is an honor roll student; a self-starter, thoughtful, sincere and intelligent. She pours her heart and soul into whatever she chooses, and accomplishes all of what she does without being told.
At the Club, Nancy serves as president of the teen leadership program, Keystone Club. In this role, she organizes community service activities and established the Club’s recycling program. During the school year, her sense of responsibility and nurturing style are evident as she assists younger members with homework and conducts the Club’s annual Spelling Bee. In the Teen Center, she keeps herself out of the drama that other girls get into. During summer camp, she works as a Junior Staff member, and introduced a summer reading program for campers.
Her volunteer work in the community includes organizing the annual Christmas party for homeless children at a local shelter and substance abuse recovery houses.
At Boston Latin Academy, she is known for her leadership, service and school spirit. She enjoys musical theater, the Hip Hop and Drama Clubs, Academy Actors, and is a founding member of school’s Outdoors Club.
Nancy says, “The Club helped me discover my passion for becoming an elementary school teacher. It was so rewarding when parents told me that because of my help their child was doing better in school. The Club helped me flourish, and every day I thank the Club for presenting me with programs, such as College Club, which prepare me for the next step I am taking towards college. Now I have the courage to embrace my future with open arms.”
