I hope you had a safe and fun summer. Ours was busy and fulfilling: we served 3,475 youth at our summer camps, including providing jobs to more than 250 teens. Here are a few highlights:
We took a group of 24 campers from the Blue Hill Club to New York City to compete in the Apollo Theatre’s "Stars of Tomorrow” Amateur Night competition. They placed 2nd.
At the Jordan Club, teens learned new skills while helping their community through participation in a social marketing campaign designed to inform Chelsea residents about a new house party ordinance that targets underage drinking.
At the Yawkey Club of Roxbury, teens participated in a book club and workshops that addressed issues of substance abuse, gangs, peer pressure and sexual health, and self esteem. Through our partnership with the Smile Initiative, campers had access to three on-site dental clinics that offered screenings and cleanings.
We are deeply grateful for all of your support which makes these and other successes possible.

Childhood obesity is accelerating at an alarming rate. This year, Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston and the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation launched an initiative as part of the Foundation’s “Let’s Get Moving!” campaign to promote children’s healthy weight, fitness and nutrition. The impact of the program went beyond the Club’s walls.
Scituate native, 22-year-old Brooke Harrington, was surprised to learn that she could relate to the life circumstances facing inner-city kids today. But she decided to overcome her trepidation and signed up for BGCB's mentorship program, thanks to a 12-year-old South Boston resident named Dae'.
Last week all nine of our Clubs across Boston and in Chelsea celebrated Myra Kraft Opening Day, which kicks-off the 2009-10 program year. The day is named in honor of BGCB's Chair Emerita, Myra Kraft, who spoke to youth during a pep rally held in her honor at the South Boston Club on September 15.
Many of us think of summer camp as a carefree time to make friends and learn to swim. For one Young Leader, Javon Martin, also known as "Young Fresh," summer camp at our Blue Hill Club in Dorchester presented some unexpected challenges and joys as he mentored younger campers in the Music Clubhouse.

Following what certainly felt like the shortest summer in Boston history, why not welcome all of the sights and sounds of Christmas in September? Disney will bring the holidays to Boston from September 25 - 27 at South Station as part of an interactive 40-city train tour that benefits Boys & Girls Clubs nationally.
