Five-Year Strategic Plan: Laying the Groundwork for BGCB’s Future

In 2006, Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston embarked on a strategic planning process that engaged the voices of 470 stakeholders and helped chart the future growth of the organization. Led by a team of Bain & Company consultants working pro-bono, BGCB articulated an ambitious strategic vision that calls for the organization to invest in impact and innovation to double the number of youth served by 2013.

As articulated in our Strategic Plan, our organizational priories for the next five years are to:

  • Increase the impact of our current offerings through innovative programs and added capacity;
  • Broaden our reach to serve more youth by developing a proven, flexible model for Shared-Space Clubs;
  • Invest in staff development and retention to reward and reinforce high levels of engagement;
  • Use clear metrics to ensure continuous improvement in our programs and communicate our impact;
  • Heighten community engagement through continued collaboration and effective partnerships to increase our impact on youth.

Now six months into what will be a full year of implementation planning, we are focused on increasing number of youth served, especially those at impact threshold:

  • Increase number of active members by 25%
  • Increase number of total members by 18%

  • Increase number of total youth served by 12%

  • Increase median daily attendance from 18% to 20%

In addition, we have established four working groups to help create the roadmap for achieving our goals by 2013. With reports due to the Board by early 2008, the working groups, each chaired by a different Board member, are:

  • Shared-Space Clubs: to define the core elements and refine the success factors of Shared-Space sites; identify new growth opportunities and organizational structure to support expansion;
  • Public Funding Opportunities: to research and develop potential government funding opportunities and applications;
  • Community Engagement: to identify community needs to be addressed by enhanced partnerships; refining the agency’s community leadership and public policy role;

  • YSPN Model Review: to review program and administrative linkages with the agency, staff model and full capacity plans.
