Keane Children’s Center (Green Street) Monday to Friday 1-8 p.m. (Ages 6-12)
Ansin Youth Center (High Street) Monday to Friday 1-8 p.m. (Teens)
Community:
Charlestown has experienced a shift in its population and industry over the past two decades. Many historic buildings that fell into disrepair have been converted to residential buildings and office spaces, and an increasing number of young professionals are joining families who have lived in the neighborhood for generations. While encouraged by the ongoing transformation, the community served by BGCB continues to confront multiple and serious challenges including poverty, inadequate education, unemployment, prevalent crime, and high levels of substance abuse. Located within one square mile of the Charlestown Club are three housing development projects, including the largest housing development in Boston. In response to an increasing substance abuse problem in the Charlestown community, the Club provides violence prevention workshops and anti-substance abuse education including: “Just the Facts,” a day which educates young members, ages 6 to 12, about the dangers of drug use, and on-going workshops for all members, including teens, and a newly formed support group for members whose lives are impacted by substance abuse in their families.
Charlestown Club Programs
Arts: Art classes, trips to museums, cultural and holiday celebrations, creative writing, talent
shows, dance, drama, music lessons (ages 10+).
Education: Tutoring, science classes, homework help, standardized test preparation, College Club (ages 14-18), educational events, career preparation (ages 12-18).
Leadership & Character Development/Life Skills: Adventure Challenge, Smart Moves, teen workshops, Teen Rap, Life Skills, Keystone Club (ages 14-18), Torch Club (ages 9-12), Community Service Group, Junior Staff (ages 14-18).
Sports, Fitness & Recreation: Basketball, hockey, soccer, touch football, baseball, dodgeball, kickball, weight lifting, sports clinics, intramural sports teams, Nate Hurwitz Basketball
Tournament.
Technology: YouthNet, digital music studio, Robotics, Junior Tech Team (ages 6-12), Club
Newspaper (ages 6-12), Tech Team (ages 13-18), Bake Tech (ages 13-18), Movie Tech (ages 13-18).
