Community:
Chelsea is a small, densely populated city of 2.2 square miles. Home to more than 35,000 residents, Chelsea has experienced an increase in growth and development since the early 1990s. Formerly run-down buildings and abandoned lots were transformed into new housing and businesses. While Chelsea has experienced a strengthened infrastructure and restoration of services, there are still a number of serious challenges, including poverty, inadequate education, unemployment, prevalent crime, substance abuse and addiction, and a 13% teen birth rate. In response to the latter epidemic, the Jordan Club has implemented a teen pregnancy prevention initiative, which includes: “Baby Think It Over” (providing teen members with a life-like baby doll that mimics the real-world experience of raising children), education, mentoring, group talks for girls and boys, and frank one-on-one discussions with members about making healthy choices.
