When Amy MacDonald of Heritage Flag was contracted by the Boston Red Sox to create the Opening Day banner commemorating the historic 2004 World Series Championship, she was naturally thrilled. Then she was perplexed. Where can I create a banner large enough to cover the Green Monster at Fenway Park? Her shop was not big enough . . . but the gym at the South Boston Club was. Amy and her staff contacted Club staff, who happily went along with the stealth project, allowing Amy and her crew to secretly work in the gym when it was not already being used by members. When the Sox won again in 2007, Amy again got the call, and the Club Gym again was where the banner was built. Amy has donated items to the Club and with the help of the Red Sox threw a huge cook-out and party for Club Members with Wally the Green Monster at Moakley Park.

Last month, the New England Aquarium brought their “Traveling Tide pool” to the South Boston Boys & Girls Club as part of the Aquarium’s outreach program. More than 30 members had the opportunity to touch live animals, including starfish, snails, and horseshoe crabs, while learning about the ocean life of the Boston Harbor.
