Since 1986, Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston (BGCB) has managed the pushcart vendors on Boston Common and several other smaller city parks, contracted by and in conjunction with the City of Boston Parks & Recreation Department.
This arrangement provides much-needed income to BGCB, through rental fees, to support high-impact programming to more than 14,000 youth each year, and provides management and program support to the Parks Department. With staff experienced in managing pushcart vending, BGCB administers the program through diligent review of applications and maintenance of all requirements for safe, attractive and diverse vending services.
The pushcarts are independently owned and operated by local entrepreneurs. All vendors are required to submit detailed application materials to BGCB for the duration of their participation in the program. BGCB staff work closely with representatives of the Parks Department, the Park Rangers and the independent vendors who operate the pushcarts, to ensure requirements are met regarding safety, sanitation, behavior, appearance, permits and insurance.
