I am honored to serve as Chair of the Board of Directors and keenly aware of the responsibility that comes with the stewardship of an organization that plays such a critical role in fostering the growth and vitality of our kids and our community. I am humbled by the legacy of leadership that includes not only Sandy Edgerley, who just completed five extraordinary years as Chair of the Board, but has, throughout BGCB’s 117-year history, included so many distinguished and dedicated leaders. It’s a great testament to BGCB how many of these former leaders, as well as members of their families, remain involved with the organization.

During my 12 years of involvement with the organization, I have been so impressed with the high standards to which BGCB’s volunteer and professional leadership holds itself, and the incredible commitment to a culture of continuous improvement that exists throughout the organization and keeps it innovative and impactful. I know of no organization that is doing a better job of leveraging key partnerships to expand its reach or that’s doing a better job of serving its recipients.

In the years ahead, I look forward to working in partnership with Josh Kraft and his entire staff to accomplish a few key goals:

Serve more young people:

    • We are exploring opportunities to establish programs and facilities in the neighborhoods that we identified in our strategic planning effort, completed in 2008, as being particularly in need of additional after school services.
    • We hope to reach more and retain more teen members at our existing Clubs.

Family Engagement:

    • Research has shown that family engagement in after school activities leads to increased family involvement in children’s education, improved relationships between parents and children and improvement in the after school programs themselves. Although family engagement is not new to BGCB, we are committed to expanding our programs in this crucial area.

Strengthening our Partnerships:

    • We are committed to finding additional ways to leverage our more than 200 partnerships to deepen our offerings and leverage our growth.

Diversifying our funding sources:

    • We plan to broaden our outreach to individual donors, explore greater government funding opportunities, and expand our corporate partnership activities.

This is an ambitious set of goals, but I’m confident that we will accomplish all of it and hopefully more — as we remain committed to serving the young people who need us most.

Jonathan G. Davis

Chair of the Board of Directors

I am deeply grateful to our many generous supporters who made Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston a philanthropic priority during my time as Chair of the Board of Directors. From major corporations, to small business owners, to individual donors, it was incredible to see how our friends really pulled together for BGCB, and by doing so, ensured that we could keep our commitment to the families we serve.

Congratulations to my friend Jon Davis, who was elected to the role of Chair of the Board at our Annual Meeting on November 18, 2010. I know the organization will continue to thrive under your leadership.

Thank you to our wonderful Board members and donors who have demonstrated to us that as long as we keep focused on our mission, you will help us continue to make a difference in the lives of kids who need us all across Greater Boston.

It has been a true pleasure to work with you, and I am looking forward to continuing to work with you all for years to come! Thank you.

Sandra M. Edgerley

Immediate Past Chair, Board of Directors

Board of Directors

The primary responsibilities of the Board of Directors are to set policies and the strategic direction of the agency; approve plans and programs for the more than 14,000 young people whom BGCB serves in Clubs in Boston and Chelsea, and through our Youth Service Providers Network; and adopt the annual budget for the organization in addition to raising and dispersing funds. Furthermore, board members traditionally consider all actions on matters of general policy.

Board of Overseers

The Board of Overseers is charged with supporting BGCB's principal activities and policies, and acting as a liaison between the agency and the various communities it serves.
