Camp Features
The number one rule at Camp Harbor View is to have fun! In order to make the number one rule easier to follow, Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston is working every day to make 2010 — the camp's fourth season — a bigger and better summer for the campers.
An aquatics program features a swimming pool, Courageous Sailing and kayaking. The Camp also welcomes performing arts groups for performances in its outdoor amphitheater.
In 2008, BGCB began a Counselor In Training (CIT) program with both summer and year-round components. The program accepts 25 15-year-olds each summer, and the CITs will receive a weekly stipend and be eligible for bonuses and raises based on performance reviews.
Camp Harbor View, a summer day camp created by the Camp Harbor View Foundation, Inc., located on Long Island in Boston Harbor, hosted its first campers beginning on July 2, 2007. The campers, boys and girls ages 11 to 14 from across the City of Boston come from every neighborhood in the city and have been selected based on outreach to community organizations and city agencies. Campers are charged $5 for a four-week session ($1.25 per week). A wide range of camp activities are offered through the engagement of program partners.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston was selected by philanthropist and BGCB Senior Advisory Board member Jack Connors and Mayor Thomas M. Menino — whose shared vision created Camp Harbor View — to operate the camp, providing skilled staff and working with program partners. Camp Harbor View’s Director, Carolyn (Cara) Gould, manages a full-time staff of 45 and 24 junior counselors recruited through the Boston Youth Fund. The camp has an experienced, licensed social worker on staff and healthcare professionals at the on-site health facility donated and staffed by Partners Health Care.
The camp’s hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Campers are transported to and from the camp each day from one of 14 transportation hubs located across the city.
