Young Leaders Program

The Young Leaders program began at the Blue Hill Club in the summer of 1998 to enable young people, who are 13 or 14 years old, the chance to be a junior camp counselor for the summer at one of our Clubs. The goal is to provide a fun learning experience for youth who are typically too old for day camp, and too young to work in many summer jobs programs. Throughout the summer, Young Leaders participate in workshops and trainings, conducted by staff and community providers, that center around career awareness and job readiness, conflict resolution, sexual harassment and assault prevention, and MCAS/academic support. The program has expanded to all of our Clubs.

The other main component of Young Leaders program is to provide the teens with work-type responsibilities.  Young Leaders work with younger campers, help set-up and clean up the snack area, perform administrative and custodial duties, and assist on weekly field trips for the day camp.

The goals and objectives of Young Leaders are to:

  • Develop pro-active and preventative life skills focusing on issues of conflict resolution, substance abuse, money management, leadership skills, and social development.

  • Participate in forums with business leaders to explore different career paths

  • Understand the importance of community service

  • Engage at-risk youth who are at a transitional period in their lives with positive community supports.
