H1N1 Information

Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston has developed a comprehensive set of procedures to try to prevent the spread of the H1N1 flu at our Clubs, and to respond quickly and appropriately in the event that members or staff become ill with flu-like symptoms.

We follow the Department of Public Health’s recommended guidelines and closely monitor the actions of Boston Public Schools and other local institutions that serve our members so that we can respond quickly should they determine that there is a heightened risk of H1N1 infection.

Our staff have been trained in our comprehensive flu prevention and response plan, which includes:

Preventing illness:

  • Protocols (and supplies) in place to encourage frequent hand-washing, especially for snack and meal breaks; hand sanitizer is available as an additional resource.
  • Staff will ensure that all work surfaces are wiped down throughout the day to minimize the spread of infection.
  • The teaching of hand hygiene and “cough etiquette” will be part of every member’s orientation.
  • Fliers in our Clubs will remind our staff and members of prevention measures and the importance of reporting any flu-like symptoms immediately.
  • Staff have been trained to recognize symptoms in themselves and in those we serve, with particular attention given to members with other health issues (i.e., asthma, diabetes) that put them at increased risk.
  • All members are encouraged to obtain a seasonal flu vaccine and the H1N1 vaccines when available.

Responding to illness:

  • Clubs will use all best efforts to ensure they have accurate contact information for parents/guardians in the event a member needs to be sent home or other contact is required.
  • Each Club will have an area where ill members or staff will be able to rest and where they will have limited contact with others until they can be sent home.
  • Members with flu-like symptoms will be sent home and kept home for 4 days or 24 hours after their symptoms have subsided – whichever period is longer.
  • Club staff will closely monitor Club attendance and check on children who stay home unexpectedly.
  • Staff will be directed to stay home if they have flu-like symptoms.  Each Club will anticipate staff absences, shifting staff to provide adequate supervision, or limiting/canceling programs as needed to accommodate a reduced workforce.
  • Parents will receive a letter outlining the steps we are taking to prevent the spread of any virus.

Response to regional spread of illness:

In the event that influenza is causing more severe disease, we will consider the following measures:

  • Members and staff at high-risk of flu complications, should talk to their doctor about appropriate steps, including staying home, when a lot of flu is circulating in the community.  These may include pregnant women, the very old or very young, children or adults with chronic lung disease (such as asthma), heart disease, diabetes, diseases that suppress the immune system and other chronic medical conditions.

  • Members who have an ill household member may be advised to stay home for 4 days from the day the first household member got sick.  This is the time period they are most likely to get sick themselves.

  • If influenza severity increases, people with flu-like illness should stay home for at least 7 days, even if they have no more symptoms.  If people are still sick, they should stay home until 24 hours after they have no symptoms.

Notification of Club closure:

If a Club cannot safely operate or if the external environment dictates due to widespread illness in the city, we will temporarily shut-down a Club. Parents and guardians will be notified of any Club closure through the following communications:

  • posted information on the home page and parent page of our web site www.bgcb.org

  • email and or phone call from Club staff

  • a posted notice on the front door of the Club with a phone number for further information.

Parents are encouraged to identify alternative childcare options in the event that we are unable to provide after-school care for their children for several days.

More information about influenza and related illness is available at the websites of the Boston Public Health Commission, the Centers for Disease Control and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health:  www.bphc.org, www.mass.gov/dph/flu, and www.mass.gov/dph/swineflu.

We recognize that parents are our essential partners in helping youth stay on a positive path so they can develop into responsible citizens and leaders. Parents must attend an orientation session before their child/children can be accepted for membership at a Club.
