Gone are the days of sending emails to everyone you know to share an important event in your life. A new web venture from Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston Board member Paul Rooney and his mother, www.xtraxtra.com, is part social networking, part bulletin board and part hometown newspaper. The site allows users to post milestones (birth announcements, anniversaries, athletic achievements, obituaries, etc.) and associate those milestones with communities via zip codes and school names.
More interested in what others are doing? Simply enter a zip code or school name to see the milestones associated with that location. That’s what Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston has done to promote our Youths of the Year and upcoming events. It’s easy and free (and doesn’t require anything more than a username and password).
“Growing up in South Boston in a big family, I’ve always valued a sense of community,” Paul said. “This website takes it to the next level.”
As a former “Club Kid” and a current Board member of Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston, Paul saw the opportunity to combine his innovative web idea with a way to benefit kids who are Club members today.
Visitors to the site will see interactive ads that are an extension of Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston’s “In These Hands” ad campaign, created pro-bono by Hill Holliday. Paul donated the space for the ads, which link directly to BGCB’s secure online donation page. So start spreading the news at xtraxtra.com.
