Established in 1947, the Youth of the Year Award at Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston recognizes Club members who have shown superior leadership, academic achievement, and service to their respective Club community. The annual program builds personal growth and leadership qualities among our young members.

Get to know Maryona, Charlestown Club member and 2021 Club Youth of the Year:

Maryona began her Club journey when she became a member of Charlestown Club 13 years ago. She started off very shy, but gradually broke out of her shell and began to build relationships with her peers and Club staff. Maryona attributes her personal growth to her life at the Club—from the bonds she made with staff to the many programs she participated in. Some of the programs included Torch Club, Keystone, Ready to Work, College Club, trips to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Explore Japan Club, in which her commitment and dedication to the yearlong program earned her a trip to Japan.

In addition to these programs, Maryona also became a junior staff and a lifeguard at the Club. As a Club Junior Staff, Maryona paid it forward by making sure every kid felt included and respected in the same way the staff made her feel as a member. She is described by others as a caring, compassionate leader with a strong spirit. She is passionate about equality and equity for all and shares her knowledge with the people in her community. Maryona has been accepted to several schools and plans to pursue a degree in medicine.
