In a city known for its world-class healthcare, a harsh reality persists: where you live in Boston can determine how long you live. The 23-year life expectancy gap between Back Bay and Roxbury, neighborhoods just two miles apart, has galvanized community leaders, healthcare advocates, and residents to take action.
On Saturday, June 21st, 2025, Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston (BGCB) will lead the Walk for Health Equity, bringing together hundreds of Bostonians in a powerful demonstration of unity and purpose. The march will begin at 10 AM at Boston Common, with participants walking to the Yawkey Club of Roxbury, where a vibrant Healthy Futures Fest will transform the afternoon into a celebration of wellness and community action.
“This isn’t just about statistics, it’s about our neighbors, our families, our future,” says Robert Lewis Jr., Nicholas President and CEO of BGCB. “When we march together, we’re not just walking; we’re standing up for every child’s right to grow up healthy, regardless of their zip code.”
Following the march, the Healthy Futures Fest at Yawkey Club will offer:
- Free health screenings and wellness resources
- Fresh food from local vendors
- Fitness demonstrations and movement classes
- Information about nutrition, healthcare and more
Youth will take center stage as leaders and changemakers throughout the day, with teen members from BGCB and partner organizations helping lead both the walk and festival.
Registration is free and open to all at Walk for Health Equity | BGCB. Early registrants will receive commemorative materials. BGCB invites everyone, supporters, families, youth, and community members, to join the Walk for Health Equity. Register to walk, volunteer, or exhibit at the Healthy Futures Fest. Every step taken and every voice raised brings us closer to a Boston where every young person has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their zip code.
“When we expect greatness, we achieve justice,” Lewis adds. “This march is our collective statement that every Bostonian deserves the chance to live a long, healthy life.”
